Scorpius Dance Theatre Presents Brand New Show, L.O.V.E, Featuring All Live Music

From April 28-30 at 7:30 p.m., Scorpius Dance Theatre will present L.O.V.E, a brand new show choreographed by Scorpius’ Director, Lisa Starry, with live original music by Kristofer Hill. L.O.V.E is a series of short stories portraying the various types of relationships and stages of love that impact our lives. Told through dance, film and live music, this unique production will take audiences on a journey of emotions while exploring one common theme: love is everything. According to Starry, “L.O.V.E is inspired by experiences in my life. While the stories are personal to me, I believe they are very relatable. The dancers have become really emotionally connected to these stories, and my hope is the audience will feel the same way.” In L.O.V.E, Starry explores a variety of relationship dynamics and stages of love, which range from serious to lighthearted and oftentimes humorous scenarios. As can be expected, the various points in romantic relationship are portrayed, including young love, wedding jitters, marriage, and even overwhelming, smothering love. In addition, Starry expresses other personal dynamics, including sibling rivalry, motherly love, finding forgiveness, loss of someone close, and a lack of confidence in oneself. A milestone for Scorpius, in the company’s 17 year history, this is the first time Starry has set an entire production to live music. Accomplished composer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Kristofer Hill will join the stage with the dancers during the entire production of L.O.V.E. As well as providing vocals, he will play a variety of instruments, including guitar, drums, keyboard and a baby grand piano. Starry and Hill have a long history working together. His original soundtracks have...

Scorpius Dance Theatre’s ‘Catwalk’ Returns to Phoenix Theatre

Scorpius Dance Theatre’s ‘Catwalk’ Returns to Phoenix Theatre

Back by popular demand, Scorpius Dance Theatre presents CATWALK, February 25-27 at Phoenix Theatre’s Hardes Theatre. Fashion meets dance on the runway in this high-energy, original contemporary dance production that fuses funky fashions by local designers, the sexy athleticism of Scorpius’ dancers, and the distinct choreography of Lisa Starry. This year’s CATWALK also features guest choreography and performances by Angel Castro of HALO Movement Collective. “I received such a great response from the original CATWALK, so I knew I wanted to bring it back to the stage some day. I decided to keep the most popular dance pieces in the show, while adding some new works for an element of surprise,” said Lisa Starry, founder and director of Scorpius Dance Theatre. The stage for CATWALK is set-up in a long narrow configuration, as if the dancers are moving down a runway. An up-close and intimate performance space, audience seating is along the “runway,” much like seating at a fashion show. Scorpius’ dancers strut their stuff in 18 different choreographic works, including several new pieces, as well as humorous fashion runway spoof interludes. Many of the costumes from the original CATWALK have returned, including designs by Trish Martin of Punkouture; Alicia “AK” Klovenas of Culture Revolution; and George Johnson of George J Designs. George Johnson has also created costumes for the new pieces. CATWALK is February 25 at 7 p.m. and February 26-27 at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Hardes Theatre at Phoenix Theatre is located at 100 E. McDowell Rd, Phoenix AZ, 85004. Tickets range from $25 to $45 (plus service fee). For tickets, visit www.scorpiusdance.com or call...
